Back to regulalry scheduled posts with the first day of 8th and closing weekend

6-3-08
I was going to process some earlier shots first but decided to post these images while my thoughts were still fresh. They are of the final performance of the Corsairs.
These guys have been my favorite ren performers. Nobody has more closely chronicled their rise from a local act filling a niche to a major crossover group performing across the country, making invaluable contributions to the genre. I’ve described them once as an elegant synergy. They are that rare “lightning in a bottle” that we are lucky to bear witness. It’s been a pleasure becoming friends with them and it greatly saddens me they will be no more. Below chronologically are some of my favorite Corsairs moments:

               1) A collaboration with QAL and Spoonfed Tribe to sing the Mayor Sleeps Tonight a parody of Lion Sleeps Tonight. A rare fun moment that comes together
               2) The guys with QAL occasionally perform Minstrel Boy to the tune of Parting Glass. A performance of this piece at Kansas City Ren Fest still strikes me as the best.
               3) The first time at TRF, they performed hilarious improv bits to Barret’s Privateers that had everyone wailing.
               4) Alamo Irish fest was 1 of their most exciting gigs. The whole weekend had huge crowds of people who had never seen the Corsairs before with CDs being completely sold out.
               5) After great effort, the group gets booked for 1 day at the North Texas Irish festival, 1 of the largest celtic events in the US. Venues like this are very resistant to hire ren acts, particularly of this genre. Their show was SRO and had the 2nd highest merchandise sales of any act. They were invited back for several times establishing themselves as one of the festival’s favorite groups.
               6) Kevin, the restroom and Royal Oak. You just had to be there.
               7) 2 days after Roger, a member of the Scarborough and A-kon communities, passed away, the guys performed a show in his honor with their most heart-wrenching songs.
               8) Kevin and Gregg helped oversee a benefit for Wes Bosner who was critically hospitalized. The kind of act that makes your heart grow 3x in size.
               9) On an evening sail in Key West, the guys shot off the ashes of Ed Westfield, founder of the SCRIBE.
10)Renradio aired a pirate themed program that included interviews w/ the Corsairs conducted by yours truly.
11)Morning show at Maryland Ren fest on the Globe Stage was 1 of those performances that hit on all points. Perfect playlist, perfect vocals, perfect audience and perfect energy.
12)During Scarby’s Pirate weekend, guest act the Crimson Pirates performed Fiddler’s Green. The Corsairs assisted by a few of us fans acted out their schtick for the song out in the audience. The reaction by the Crimsons was hysterical.
13)CDs were mailed out to a school in Korea. The thought of Korean children singing along to Corsairs tunes makes me smile.
14)The live recording concert for the CD 9 Lives was a phenomenally charged event that was worth the year long wait.

For your amusement, a gigantic barrage of pictures covering all the permutations of the faire's chessmatch. This stuff draws a big crowd and I managed to pretty much piece both sets together. Enjoy!
