6-8-04
Another season comes to an end. Time moves so quickly as one gets older. It makes you think. I've been doing faires for 14 years and Scarby has become my home faire. Yes complacency and familarity has taken some of the magic away from the experience. I don't giddy with anticipation like I use to, come opeing day-feeling more business as usual as some crafters must. But I still enjoy it and manage lots of shots even though I think I've run out of things to photograph. Scarby still holds my interest. Is it the relations I've built up? The strong dance traditions? The openness of the cast? The acts? I'm not sure if it's 1 thing or all of the above. Or even if it really matters. What's important is it's still a welcome part of my life.

With that in mind I've still managed to conjure some personal highlights of the season.

               Highs:

1)My favorite act, the Corsairs still managing and going strong despite recent changes. They even have maintained the annual release of a CD.
2)Management continues to try to improve the site and the faire. There was a big addition of green and plantlife to make things more beautiful. There has been an expansion of promotion of Scarby to Austin (that's 3 hours away). Coy and the rest of the administration need to be commended for their efforts.
3)Lars Sloane of the Rogues NOT retiring as been originally reported. He's a fun guy and it's great he'll still be around
4)Pirate weekend returns along with the Crimson Pirates-2 valid reasons to go out and play at faire
5)The annual cache of visting cast on Memorial Weekend. I get a real kick out of seeing all these people coming to play with us. Many do so with gusto. It makes me anxious to see them perform at their own faire. It's great we have a faire that's so open to others.
6)Weddings and more weddings. Saw plenty just over 2 days. Kim and Dana, the Renstalkers, 2 of the great photographic arsenal of Texas figure most in my mind.
7)Rediscovering the smoothie. Sounds dopey unless you're enduring a hot day here.
8)Court dance. This has really grown over the years. I remember not long ago seeing it consists perhaps only a dozen members or so of cast. It has become quite popular.
9)More pictures. I just don't know how I keep managing to burn so much film. But I do.

               A few lows:

1)The drive. Moving to Austin has increased travel time 5 fold-blah!
2)Weather was a little nutty this year with the cold opening and plenty of flo-, I mean rain
3)The italian ice running just when we needed it the most
4)The big increase in the season pass. We had to be content with the cost being 60% of that of other faire passes instead of 40%. The inhumanity! That was sarcasm by the way.

5-25-04
After weeks of hard labor, I returned to Scarborough in time for their Pirate Weekend. It was a crazy, fun time that I wish could have kept going longer. The temperature was on the rise, pushing 90 degrees. But there was a compensating breeze. Enjoy!

5-04-04
A half good weekend out at 4th weekend of Scarby.

4-27-04
Somehow I managed to have some fun on this muddy and humid day at the faire.

4-13-04
An unsually cool and damp opening weekend for Scarborough fair. The weather was more typical of TRF. There were still good times to be had in spite of it though. Enjoy!

4-4-04
A sneak peek for the events at Scarborough via a nice surprise for Austin, TX.

Enjoy and good days to all,
Frank Hui
