Final weekend at Scarborough was quite an experience. On Friday night a lot of rain fell. Saturday there was some rain that stopped early, but the day was still very overcast with muddy surroundings. Saturday night there was perpetual rain that went into a good chunk of Sunday, making the grounds even muddier. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, we got over 15 inches of rain with parts of the expressway closed off due to flash flooding and accidents. And it still wasn't enough to relieve drought conditions! Anyway, despite that, the faire opened all day and a remarkable number of patrons came, most of them regular customers armed with umbrellas or later buying ponchos. It's a lot to be said of the faire when people are willing to risk such hazardous conditions. So much rain fell, the first two mudshows were cancelled since the consistency was bad (ironic, isn't it?). Yet, most performers forged on. Don Juan & Miguel and Throw Up still went on and Isis & the Stardancers danced their whole shows without a hitch, even when it poured, to very appreciative audiences. People had mud fights, and, at the beginning of the day, King Henry dived into and swam in a huge water puddle in full regalia. It was so rainy and damp (100% humidity) that my camera lens and viewfinder fogged up within the first 30 minutes and stayed that way in spite of my efforts. So, please forgive the state of the photos. It got so bad that, by the late afternoon, when it finally stopped raining and the sun came out, my pictures were getting a radioactive aura to them as you'll see below.
Since the grounds had turned into a giant tarpit, I pretty much stuck to the Corsairs for most of the day. Their last day shows are always a trip and the weather didn't stop them from having fun, nor keeping a full load of spectators from coming to watch them every performance. Most of the shows were request shows. During one special performance, I tipped the guys to do their "Amazing Grace" medley. It's where they sing "Amazing Grace" to different tunes. They usually sing about a handful of versions. Since I put in $5, they were going to sing 5 versions. While they were singing, other people put in more money and they committed themselves to singing 22 versions and they did it. Highlights included singing "Amazing Grace" to the "Scooby Doo Theme," "Addams Family," "South Australia," "Sixteen Candles," "Good Vibrations," "Rawhide," and the "Mickey Mouse Club Song."
