Other Adventures 2009-2010

9-27-10
To round out this busy month of escapades I've inlcuded a few colorful images from the 23rd annual Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Also we've got some herioc moments from the CASA 5K charity run. Both events full of good causes worthy of your attention.

At last Part 5 of DragonCon images are posted. The end of a long excurion. Of course I add my thoughts for such an adventure.
               1) Apparently size matters. The con keeps getting bigger and more crowded. I noticed a marked difference from 3 years earlier. Everything was more. The organizers will be hard-pressed to deal with this expansive growth without compromising the identity of the convention.
               2) Expansion of activties to additional hotels helps-to a point. It was wise for the organizers to exploit the Sheraton and the Westin, but honestly the times I went to these hotels, the buzz and atmosphere felt so dead in comparison. It would be nice, in time, if more of the social energy cold be transferred to these other places. That being said, spreading the parties out was a beneficial move. Having the Rainbow party at the Sheraton gave it a space 3 times the size from previous years with the results being a phenomenal event for its intended audience.
               3) On Monday the costumers disappeared. I realize the majority of people check out of the hotels but I really was surprised at the percental drop in the presence of costumes. Surprising since I knew of several people staying Monday night, panels were still being attended and the exhibitor and dealers' room were full to the end.
               4) The con and the hotels need to deal with the elephant in the room. My friend and I were fortunate to have experienced very little conflict. However there were way too many stories of bad encounters with drunken football fans and stubborn hotel security. While I realize the number of troublemakers comprise a small percentage, it doesn't make the numerous moments of harassment (sexual or otherwise) any less pleasant. I know the Marriott claims to love hosting DragonCon. Well better steps need to be taken to ensure our safety and peace of mind.
               5) The parade rocks as much as ever. It woud be nice to able to have access to a full official recording for those who participated. The average footage by spectators is not the best quality.
               6) I had mixed feelings about the Hall of Fame. On the 1 hand I was more involved with the rest of the con to make it a priority. On the other, the physical set up with no photography allowed put me off a bit. I understand the need for crowd control for the big draws but honestly, the celebrities felt much more accessible to me 3 years ago.
               7) This year left me a little worn out with Steampunk. I still love the genre and I saw some some very creative applications of it. But I got a little too much sensory overload on the genre from those 4 days.
               8) The con has an enormous and noble heart. Major attention must be paid for the blood drive and charity auction for Lupus. I particularly love using people in costume starting Thursday morning to recruit donors.
               9) Attention must be paid for the con's atypical tracks. It's all too easy to forget there's a writer's workshop going on and that they have quality film festival that is worth taking time out for. I was particularly fortunate to catch an excellent short documentary on DragonCon itself called Conventional Wisdom. Nicely produced and succinctly captures what the event is all about on a very human level.
               10) The con made a noble attempt to make badge pick up easier. Alas it was only a serious help to attendees who were already around Thursday morning.

Hurray Part IV of DragonCon images are posted. Again mostly superhero stuff but I got involbved in a lot of panels and specialized shoots again. What can I say it's my wheelhouse. Just one more set to go.

Part III of DragonCon adventures is up. The bulk of shots are from my involvement with a variety of special shoots I took on that saturday. Still plenty of fun and variety though.
