5-10-08                Amazingly enough we have another Asian event. Who knew Austin had so many. This one, the Dragon Boat festival, was a great deal of fun, educational and free. A full day of actvities during a beautiful sunny day. 4-27-08                Spent a nice couple of hours on a wednesday evening at an Asian festival 3-15-08                Spent a great weekend up in Dallas at the 4th annual AllCon. It had evolved enough in the 2 years since I last went that it was worth commenting on                1) The convention is definitely on it's way to being a good small scale version of DragonCon. The con catered to many different tastes and no one group held dominance in presence. I saw a great mix of Ren folk, anime, Star Wars, Browncoats, Trekkies and Superheroes. I even spotted a Colonial Space Marine.                2) This year they had a small but good lineup of guests. Aaron Douglas is highly entertaining storyteller, Tonya Kay proved to be an interesting performer and I felt a bit of nostalgia having Burton Gilliam present.                3) There were some very well constructed costumes from each genre. The highlights include a pair of Predators, a very heavy Steampunk suit and a stunning anime gown. It's great that the Texas area has such capable costumers.                4) Even in such a small event I still manage to miss a couple good outifts including this small boy in a cloth R2D2 suit.                5) Even more amazing were the number of enjoyable panels, workshops and events that conflicted with each other 2-17-08                Capped off my asian theme weekend with celebrating the lunar new year at the Austin chinatown center. It too is a young event but is growing by leaps and bounds. Something the community has made clear it really wanted. 2-12-08                As part of a madcap asian weekend, ventured into the world of Austin anime called Ikkicon. The event is young (2nd year) but got a great response and shows a lot of promise for a genre convention. 11-9-07                A few pages from an afternoon at the Celtic Festival 10-24-07                Some fun shots at a charity event held by the Goodwill Corporation Anon and good days, |
