Sunday afternoon, friends and I checked out the festivities of the 3rd annual Austin Chinese New Year. It was the 2nd day of a celebratory weekend that involved various local acts, international entertainers and fireworks. A variety of groups and schools representing different asian cultures and performances. Both mornings were started off with an energetic rendition of the Chinese Lion and Dragon dance.

The previous description and all these wonderful images are brought to you by Frank Hui. Because of his devotion, I have nothing to add. --Robyn Sotherby

Sunday morn

All part of the Lion Dance

A staple of chinese celebrations

Firecrackers are also key

Warming up the crowd

Members of the Texas Dragon/Lion Dance Team getting primed

They were selling these puppets

And so it begins

This character plays with the lions

At the moment he's toying w/this cub

Good etiquette is just our way

Now you see why they had to stretch out first

An impressive pride going out to the crowd

Patrons are overwhelmed by the sights & sounds of

firecrackers dispelling evil spirits
