For the first time I have attended this convention that began 20 years ago as an outgrowth of a local sci-fi/gaming group. The name is derived from the computer platform of 1 of its founding members. It has evolved into a major annual event that
caters to a broad range of fans of differents genres and cult entertainments from comic books to Star Wars to the Dragon Riders of Pern. Spread over 3 hotels (the Hyatt, the Marriott & the Hilton) and an attendence of over 20,000, the convention is atypical
in that it is more like an intensely concentrated non-stop social mixer over the Labor day weekend. Thousands dress up in all manner of costumes, mingle, party, reconnect with old friends, bond with new ones and even manage to take in a panel or 2. Not a bad way to spend 4 days.
The previous description and all these wonderful images are brought to you by Frank Hui. Because of his devotion, I have nothing to add. --Robyn Sotherby
