  Maryland   Renaissance   Festival 2002 |

09-26-02                Greetings, one and all!. Got back from a very full and tiring few days from the Maryland area where I partook in Pirate Invasion Weekend. And there were plenty of pirates. Pirate singers, pirate performers, pirate children. All that was missing were some Seadogs. It's times like these that show why fairs should have theme weekends.                I was literally bouncing from stage to stage trying to keep to an agenda of things to do. Among some of the personal highlights for me were:                1) Getting to see the Corsairs, Pyrates Royale and Crimson Pirates perform together, even if it was Drunken Sailor.                2) The appreciative reactions from different musical acts when I tell them I'm part of Renradio.com. They included Bedlam, Master Tallus (aka Gary Schwartz) & the Mediaeval Baebes.                3) After almost 4 years getting to finally see "The Wheel of Death" stunt done by Whipflash.                4) After 2 years, getting a chance to really sit down and get to know some of these wonderful pirate peoples.                5) Expanding my circle of friends with lovely people like Emerald and Gary.                6) Learning some wonderful history about the Pyrates                7) Watching the Crimson Pirates really evolving into their own as a group with fun and original renditions of songs like "South Australia".                8) Actually seeing a couple of patrons showing their support by wearing either Corsairs or Crimson Pirates shirts.                9) Everyone connected to the Corsairs continually trying to find change to keep up with nonstop merchandise sales.                10)At dinner, being reminded that in the fair community there's only 1 degree of separation after meeting Mike from the St. Louis Ren faire who has met Robyn and his lady Andrea                11)The Corsairs packing in a full crowd at the Globe Stage during their Sunday 11 AM morning show. The audience responded with ballistic enthusiasm to a set that included "Barrett's Privateers", a new song, "Minstrel Boyz" and a very warped version of "Old Joe".                There were a few down down sides as well:                1) See number 9 above.                2) A lot of dirt & dust affecting people. I was expecting 1 gigantic furball from all the hacking going on                3) The weather was very unpredictable up until the weekend came. Humid and erractic lighting. It was actually more comfortable in Dallas.                4) Maryland being so diffferent from Scarborough that I spent much more time exploring faire and a lot less being social :). Anon and good days, |
